Dyeing, Processing and the Environment

Dyeing is where Tirupur's story turned. Until the late 1990s dyehouses discharged untreated effluent into the Noyyal river; the courts ordered zero liquid discharge in 2006, and in 2011 the Madras High Court shut more than 700 dyeing and bleaching units that had not complied. The cluster rebuilt around common effluent treatment plants and now reuses the great majority of its process water.
